This is going to be a week long series on how to rebuild a mast.
After considering the costs of a used aluminum mast, a new aluminum mast or the cost to repair our wood mast we have decided to go with the repair job. The mast is made of spruce, Sitka Spruce to be precise. This is a very light, strong wood that grows in Alaska and is a bit rare on the east coast. Anna found some up in Annapolis Md and so, we rented a car and I spent 16 hours friday driving 800 miles round trip to buy 4 boards. If you look really close you can see that they are covered in gold, or they should be for what I had to pay to buy them.
