Now, for the last board. The scarf joint for this board is a difficult one to make for it isn’t a normal 10 to 1 scarf. The taper of the mast comes into play so I will have to clamp the board beside the mast scarf and scribe a line off from the mast scarf on to the board to get the proper angle for the top board scarf. I used a chisel to mark the scarf line for it could span the distance between the board and the joint.
Next, was the truing up of the two side boards. This is a bit difficult for the jointer I used didn’t make perfect joints. As you can see, when I laid the hand plane across the two boards I could see a gap indicating the joint wasn’t perfectly even. A few strokes of the plane though, made them even with each other. Now, only 8 more feet to go.
With a few minor adjustments, the top board fit nice and tight and after lots of glue and even more clamps we have a mast again (or at least a very expensive tapered box!). Next is the shaping of the mast or just how much wood shavings can one man make in a day?
